javac error

Im having issues with java/kate in Suse 9.3.

when i try to compile it using the javac command it returns "bash: javac: command not found"

so I need to set my path right. the problems with that is when I edit my profile it the etc directory it says I don't have permission to write the file.

so I try to chmod the file, and it says "chmod: changing permissions of `profile': Operation not permitted"

help plz & thank you

try changing it as superuser, I tend to use gedit for my editing so you can do...

Code:

su -c "gedit"

and then do the changes you require with su permissions

Actualy your profile is not stored in /etc/profile. Assuming that you use the default bash shell, you have to add your line in /home/yourname/.bash_profile
