Java printing problem

Running slackware 10.2 with cupsd

I find that I cannot print from any java application using Java 1.5. I get the printer dialog boxes coming up but the printed page just has

Error: /configureerror in --setpagedevice--
Additional information: [/Manua

This applies to my applications or downloaded applications like JEdit

However I also have a Java 1.4 jre on my system and I find that if I force the application to run with this then printing works fine.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this. I suspect that there is some problem of java 1.5 communicating with ghostscript.

I do have a kubuntu partition I am playing with and have not found this problem.
