Is my server alive?

I need to write a program to determine whether my servers are alive and well. If they are not, I need to execute a failover script.

Does anyone have such a script? If not, what would you suggest I check on the server to make sure it is running?

There is a python script called "pyheartbeat" that monitors for unresponsive computers on a network:
