Question How to make a SDL-window "Always on top"?

I'm writing an app that needs to display a video stream. I want to do this in a sort of pop-up window that will always be on top of the GUI window. I'm doing the GUI with Qt and the video window with SDL.

SDL can give you the X11 window ID for the SDL window that was created. How can I use this to ensure the window is "Always on top"? Do I have to use X11 to do this and how if I must?

if the SDL program is a child of the GUI part (I'm assuming this isn't the root window) then it should appear on top of the GUI part

if the video window is a child of the root window, then the WM will do whatever it wants to do, all you can do is ask it to be on top, most likely this will be ignored .... there might not even be a WM listening to your program asking

if it is a child of the root window, then you could set the overide-redirect thingy on the window, making the WM less likely to ignore you (more like the WM doing nothing to the window)

but in reality there is no way to assume that any program will always be on top of all the other windows
