How to get your driver working with most programs

Hello-
I've recently written a basic driver for my mic. I can record stuff, detect volume, and start/stop recording via a command line interface.

How do I get my driver to work in Sound Recorder programs, Skype, Audacity, etc?
This task seems insanely large and impossible, especially with closed source programs.
How does one go about this? What about Video, Wireless, Webcam, etc. drivers?

Thanks,
LN75
