How do I start to probe and prod a usb device?

I want to be able to take measurements from an instrument that is usb.

How would one begin to examine the state and data coming in from the device when it is in its idle state, triggered by its button etc>?

Perhaps a pointer to a resource on beginning controlling usb devices for Linux?

perhaps when you plug it in you can look at the last few lines of dmesg to figure out what file in the /dev tree it is connected to.

if it is like a gamepad you can look at the output of cat /dev/js0...

be creative, maybe you can pipe that output thru od.
