Are you talking about the --retain-symbols-file option? This isn't necessarily portable beyond GNU, either. Also, it will only restrict what the user "knows" is in the final object; the text table will only show what you want them to see, however a smart linker can still link to what's not listed. I personally use all three: user vs. lib headers, attributes, and retained symbols.

Portability doesn't mean the support of exact linker option. Most linkers will provide some means to control the visible symbols in an object file and I hope that it would be sufficient.
