help in user authorization

hi there,
I wonder is anyone know how can I check if a given password is valid for a specified user. So far, I can find out if a given user exits by searhing the corresponding name in /etc/passwd, however, how can I check if the given password is also valid?

Yes, log in as the user with the given password, and see if it succeeds. By the way, are you trying to build a program to crack passwords ?

Posts containing information about cracking, piracy, warez, fraud or any topic that could be damaging to either LinuxQuestions.org or any third party will be immediately removed.

I think it's just an attempt to use system passwords in a program, as it is done in many cases. Here's a HOWTO that will be useful (check especially chapter 8): http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...Password-HOWTO
