That's only relevant for files opened in binary mode. In text mode, '\n' is the line separator regardless of the OS.

Doesn't DOS/Windows text files use a '\r\n' (CR-LF) while Unix text files use only a '\n'. So there is a difference?

C++ standardization has been a slow and painful process... You'll find lots of tutorials out there which worked flawlessly with compilers made 5 or 6 years ago, which throw out warnings or errors now.
