Hello, what is the best editor for linux?


Hello, im starting to study linux, and i would like to know if the vi editor is the best choice for php programing on linux, or there are other options.

It depends.
Vi has a very steep learning curve for beginners, but in my opinion is the best choise since it is a powerful editor.
You can also try emacs or gui-based editors.

No, vi is not a good choice for PHP programming. Vim (or gvim), on the other hand, is a great choice.

I would go for Eclipse with the Aptana Studio 3 plugin.

As an alternative, you can use Eclipse with the Aptana Studio 2 and PDT plugins. Here's a detailed link on setting that up:

Note that "what is the best editor for Linux" and "what is the best editor for PHP programming in Linux" are very different questions.

The best one is whatever you find more satisfying/productive/easy/interesting/ubiquitous/beautiful/.... Everyone has their own preferences. Try a few, and make your own choice. vi is an editor that anyone using Linux extensively should know, but it might not be the best for PHP programming.
