GUI design

I am looking for a GUI designer and am brand new to the idea. There is a shell-based music program (Lilypond) that I would like to create a simple GUI for, as a first step in learning the craft. It would only involve executing shell commands, no C or C++ or anything. Just something where I can attach a few buttons, menus, and text input to shell commands. Anyone know a good GUI designer that would fit my needs which would be a good first one to learn? I know a little perl (and HTML, CSS), so I'm not completely new to programming, but I would prefer something simple to start out. Thanks for any help!

If you know perl, then maybe some perl bindings of some GUI toolset would do. For example
