First of all I would like to thank everyone that has replied to all my posts. Your help was great. My program is starting to progress very nicely.

My next question is about creating a GUI front end for my application.

I'm hoping to use GTK2, and I just want to ask some questions

1. Is GTK2 compatible with windows? I'll first be developing this program for Linux, but once it is completed I would like to try porting it over to Windows.

2. What is the best book/web site to learn GTK2? I'm about to start going through all the tutorials on the gtk.org site, but I was just wondering if anyone had some other suggestions.

In answer to (1), Gtk has been ported to Windows. I don't know how easy it is to compile Gtk programs in windows, but it's certainly possible. Bear in mind the fact that you won't get a native Windows look and feel, because the Windows version of Gtk doesn't use native Windows widgets.
