Before spending money on a book try these excellent articles:

http://www.melonfire.com/community/c...3?category=PHP

They are in reverse chronological order, so you'll have to work your way through to the end page and start there.

Honestly, the O'Reilly guide has done a brilliant job of confusing me so far. I guess somewhere after the confusion I'll become proficient.

Cheers,

I like "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Sams Press.

I have both "PHP for the World Wide Web" by Larry Ullman (Visual Quickstart Guide). Normally I shun this line, but this book has been excellent. I also have the PHP 4 Bible. In general, I recommend thinking of a specific project, and finding a book that has tutorials along those lines.

Cheers!
