gfortran libraries

I am using gfortran for the first time, trying to compile and run a code that I've used before on unix with g90. After I compile the code, when I try to run it, I get a message saying
'error while loading shared libraries: libgfortran.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory'

I assume that I am not defining the directory correctly in the make file. I am using
gfortran -I/irun/lib

where /irun/lib is the directory that contains libgfortran.so.0 and other libraries. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Shared libraries must be known to the kernel. To do that you need to put /irun/lib in /etc/ld.so.conf using an editor. Then run the ldconfig command for your change to take effect. The ldconfig command is also run every time you boot. See:

man ldconfig
