gcc3.3 installation problem

Here is the process about the installation:
[root@localhost xiang]#tar zxvf gcc-3.3.tar.gz
[root@localhost xiang]# cd gcc-3.3
[root@localhost gcc-3.3]# ./configure --prefix=/xiang/gcc
Configuring for a i686-pc-linux-gnu host.
Created "Makefile" in /xiang/gcc-3.3 using "mt-frag"
./configure: line 8: cc: command not found
*** The command 'cc -o conftest -g conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.
[root@localhost gcc-3.3]# make
... ...
make: *** [all-ash] Error 2
I have read some manuals in http://gcc.gnu.org/,
but those are difficult to understand.

How to install it?
Thank you.

xiang,

CC=gcc
export CC

Then run configure. GCC, apparently, is setup to build if you don't already have gcc.

Good Luck,
chris
