The question does not have to be directly related to Linux and any language is fair game.

Your NAS isn't a Thecus is it? Or some similar Linux-based (yet proprietary system?
Well lots of those companies develop a slimmed down system, removing all but the necessary binaries, change all LSB dir locations to their own location, have completely custom startup scripts and partition mounting, insane symlinking and other stunts to prevents mis-use
If yours is such a system, it may not be the system to expect to seamlessly run gcc and other things ( use some normal Linux box for that ..), but if it's a Thecus, there are a lot of plugins you can install allowing use of rsync, perl, etc, and even so, quite a pain to work with.
Mine is Thecus.
But the model is n3200. Which gots only a few plug-in. I dont know where I could get the other plug-in and there's much plug-in for other model. I dont know how I can install these plug-in.
There are some great folks there doing some great work, but even so, it will give your Thecus box a little more functionality, and present new, awkward problems. These aren't like a standard Linux system at all.
I believe you'll soon find if you need to run gcc, or build software, you will certainly /not/ want to do this on a Thecus system, rather, some standard Linux install where all these tools are installed, and you can move about freely in a standard environment.
