Question Forking a Project

Hello.

I was wondering if anyone has any resources on forking a project.

My real situation is that I know of PHP project that is almost abandoned, and its BSD licensed. I was wondering if I could take over it and how to do it properly.

I just don't know what to say in the COPYRIGHT file. Also, would it be possible to release my work in a LGPL license?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If it's BSD licensed, you can do whatever you want with it.. you don't have to get permission to use the work. You don't even HAVE to give credit to original author. And yes, you may release it's derivative works under GPL or any other license for that matter.

This is why people call the BSD license truly open in comparison to the GPL boys...

You can take the code and release it under nearly any licence, as long as but the orginal author gets credits.

If it has website, it may be a good idea to mail the orginal author, write that you want to continue the project and check if you can get access to the site, too.

Copyright file looks like
2005 Yourname
200-2004 Orginal Author

You can also use a different form, it's just important to give credits.
