My browser of choice is Firefox. At the top of the display is a GNOME panel which is responsible for launching other applications. I populated that panel with buttons that launch self-written applications. It works well.

Each button is an icon, something chosen from a menu of symbols when the button was created. When I mouse over any of these icons a brief text appears. The text is something I entered when creating the button.

The symbol is meaningless. I would prefer to have the text displayed rather than a fish, check mark, wrench, etc. How may this be done?

Hmm -- maybe you can create a ping file with your favorite graphics program -- use the text function to create a picure of the word FIREFOX or whatever, crop it tightly, and save/export as .png -- ???
