So it is utterly overcomplicated, yes. One of the most tremendous libraries is openssl (as far as I know), because the old libs are vulnerable and it is linked almost everywhere. (you can find a post in the Slackware forum about it).
There is another library (libboost) which have a definitely different approach for this, which will make it even more interesting.
I guess we need to forbid linking forever....
