Encryption: Algorithms, Determining bit strength

i was just wondering if anyone here knew of some powerful encryption algorithms that i could base an algorithm for a small module used in a network program. This module is to encrypt the packets travelling between computers.

I was also wondering if anyone knew how to determine bit strength of encryption algorithims

thanks in advance
