What are you actually after? The Emacs editor, a lisp interpreter or the GNU operating system?

If it's one of the first two then I'd ask what Linux distribution (if any) you're presently using? As a self proclaimed noob you'd be much better off downloading your distributions pre-compiled package.

So; what do you want to install and what do you want to install it on?

See http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/wi...#Getting-Emacs

Generally most users will want the file emacs-22.2-bin-i386.zip, which contains everything you need to get started.

you can use this CD to install many GNU packages using the normal windows installer method. It has XEmacs, which is in my opinion a little easier to use than emacs:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNUWin

http://gnuwin.epfl.ch/

http://gnuwin.epfl.ch/en/index.html

Here is a direct download for Xemacs:

http://gnuwin.epfl.ch/apps/xemacs/en/index.html

Also see (windows installer wizard for emacs):

XEmacs net-installer:
