Arrow elif???????????

What does elif mean specifically?

Does it mean else if? In the context that it asks if not else then if?

Can someone clarify, or recommend a good link to explain shell statements to a newbie?

yes, that's right. it is used as an alternative test, rather that the unconditional alternative that a plain else provides. instead of an elseif or elif (depending on which lanaguage you're using) you would have to either nest if blocks inside of the if block in the previous scope, or just a string of if blocks. But this could still provide slightly different operations, depending on what you want to check for with the if's.
