Displaying strings in OpenGL

Is there an easy way to display strings in openGl (with fonts, not a bunch of texture mapped quads)? I have tried a couple of tutorials with no succes.

Extra info:
- I am using SDL as the window manager.
- Lighting is enabled.
- Model shading is 'smooth'

Try to see example from SDL_ttf. It is possible to use with OpenGL.

In Windows you have wglUseFontBitmaps and wglUseFontOutlines. In X you have glXUseXFont.

Because fonts are really a system specific item, and all the core OpenGL functions are designed to be system independent, you won't find much else outside of stuff offered by other toolkits like SDL, glut, etc.
