Developing a GNOME applet using perl
Hi there,

I'd like to develop a GNOME applet using perl. I just don't know whether it's possible or not. I need some kind of a tutorial, a how-to or simply a sample code to figure out the main things.

The only problem is that googling gives me old articles about it, some of them are even about GNOME 1.x, and I'm sure a lot has been changed since then.

Could anyone provide me a place to begin?

Thanks in advance.

I guess your journey should begin reading about the Perl gtk+ bindings:

I found an article which explains how to do it in Python. I can't post a link to it since I don't have yet 3 posts.

Anyway, this article was written in 2004, and I wanted to know wheter anything has been changed since then.

OK, it seems to work, but only under some circumstances.

I have created a .py file and a .server file and inserted them in the right places. Then, when I try to add the applet to the panel by opening the Add to Panel dialog, I get an error message saying "The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_SampleApplet". Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?"

The only way it works is when I execute the .py file before adding the applet, i.e. typing "python" in the terminal and then adding the applet to the panel.

What can I do in order to solve this problem?

Problem solved: I just had to change the .py file permissions.
