default programs

I'm just "ranting", not looking for answers directly as I have searched and doesn't look like there are for my problem.

I'm using xfce4 and set firefox as my default browser. It's a version of firefox that I got from firefoxes website rather than package manager. So gnome-open file.html launches chrome, thunar file.html, also launches chrome. And so far from what I read there is no central/unified default apps association thing.

I tried making a program hoping it would be used http://sourceforge.net/projects/cfilea/ But what ever.

its very primitive and made long ago. I'm just curious what would be the steps to get gnome, kde, xfce and etc.. To get the file association thing unified?

The answer is: the completion of the freedesktop.org mime-action standard.
