database servers in linux

hi,

are there other database servers in linux besides mysql?

if there are, then why is it that mysql is the choice of database besides other alternatives (because most use mysql)?

Search www.google.com/linux. It'll take a couple of days to go through all the links :)

Different needs = different DBs. All of the who's who of DBs have Linux ports (except maybe MSSQL).

Just to name a few - mysql, postgresql, firebird, sapdb, db2, oracle, adabas, sybase. Thats all I can remember now, there're sure to be a couple more :).

* free
* easy to install & maintain (if I could install it...your pet poodle can too and that too blindfolded)
* fabulous docs & tutorials (biggest reason)
* decent drivers and modules (PHP comes to mind ;) )
* lots of forums to answer questions (like this one)

I guess the other DBs offer all of the above and more too, its just they aren't very visible for some reason.

Oracle Database Enterprise Edition 800 dolars
and
Oracle Database Standard Edition for 300 dolars
but keep one thing in mind do you realy need the features that oracle is giving other databases gives you nearly same functionalty.
