data rate calculation

hi all,
i have a usb cable and i can send data over it so now i want to calculate the data rate.
i think that i should use one of the c timers functions but i imagine that my flowchart should be something as follows:
1. begin receiving
2. get the time now
3. end Rx
4. get the time now

so to calculate the time that the data has taken is the difference between the two times.

so my small flowchart is just feasible if there is a c function that gets the time now i.e implements step 2

just tell me.
or tell me if there is another way for calculating the data rate in general

thanks in advance

`man time`

time() returns time in seconds since epoch
