creating an e-mail program

I don't like any of the available e-mail programs for Linux, and since I know a little C and C++ I would like to try and make my own e-mail program. I don't have enough programming experience yet to create my own from scratch, so I was wondering if anyone knew of a simple, well documented, e-mail program that I could start out with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

go to Type "email" int the searchbox and hit "go".

You'll find a couple of hundreds of email client projects. Maybe you can join the development team for one you like?
Or take the sources from a project you like and adapt it to your needs (and distribute it under GPL;-).
