control Firefox proxy settings with a script

Is there a script out there, javascript perhaps, that could control the proxy being used by Firefox on the fly? I wanna change the proxy being used depending on the user or groups of users. There are firefox extensions that does this, basically the user just has to select which proxy to use. So maybe there must be a way to do it without any user intervention needed.

Thanks.. .

In each home directory there is a folder that is named .mozilla/firefox/<some random letters>.default/ (the actual directory can be found after the Path= name in .mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini; note that there may be more then one profile) this folder is where all of the setting for the browser are stored. The proxy settings are in a file called prefs.js (along with a large number of other user preferences).

A few very easy ways to do this with a shell script:
1) Give each user their own home directory, and you don't need a script or anything
2) Copy the entire .mozilla directory for every user
3) Use sed or related program to update the prefs.js file
4) edit the profiles.ini file to set the profile you want them to use as the default one.

I am sure there are thousands of other ways also.
