contents of vtable and objdump utilty

how to check the contents of a c++ executable file. I am able to compile a cpp. I have to see the contents of the executable and understand the organization of the vtables in it. For this I think I can make use of objdump utility. May I know to use this utility..

What do you want to get from the file? objdump has quite many options.

I was asked to study the layout of vtable in a c++ object file. can I do that using objdump utility. Is there any other way of doing the same. I think there is an option -fvtable which comes with gcc, can I use this for the purpose. Please help me out.

I want to take some sample c++ files and make a report ( for an academic assignment ) on the layout of the vtable in the object files.
