Exclamation changing focus and verifying?

I have a script that will install a choice of printers and it will check if the printers drivers are there and if not, they will be moved to the proper place. Where I am having trouble is checking to make sure that the printer has been installed correctly at the end and also when it pops up a dialog box telling you whether or not that is has, I don't know how to put focus back on the terminal.

So the question is, what is the command to check if the printer that I just installed was correctly installed, enabled, and activated (IE: lpadmin which isn't it either)? Once I have displayed the dialog box explaining to the user what has happened, how do I regain focus on the terminal?

I am looking for solutions to Linux and Mac.
