can't get debugging symbols when using automake

I can't seem to get debugging symbols to be added (both libraries and binaries) with automake. When make runs it compiles with -g (after all of the input files, though) and I've added -ggdb to the environment variables CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS (which also show up in the compilation lines after all input files,) and I tried adding -g to AM_CXXFLAGS in Makefile.am, but it still shows up after all of the input files. I checked and the linking stage doesn't seem to have -s or -S, so I think the problem is that the debug flags come after all of the files are processed. Makefile.am and configure.ac are pretty standard; just enough to get the job done. Do people just not expect debugging symbols when they use automake? Thanks.

Nevermind. For some reason gdb wasn't recognizing them when I used "target exec" instead of specifying the program on the command line.
