C preprocessor fails sanity check

Hi guys.

Recently, every time I try to compile an app from its source code, after issuing the ./configure command I get this message:

configure: error: C preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
See `config.log' for more details.

I check /lib/cpp but there is not directory named /cpp under /lib

this problem occurs on all source packages.

i use ubuntu ver 9.10
kernel ver 2.6.17

You may not have the C compiler installed.

Install the "build-essential" package.

Welcome to LQ.

sudo apt-get install g++ linux-libc-dev libc6-dev

.. will provide the missing files.

i tried all these solutions, but no chance.
Eventually i had to reinstall my ubuntu.

but thanx again.
