the above suggestions are all quite good especially for budding coding wannabe like us but i have this two very old books i picked up which are my favo...(forget how to spell) ...

nice to keep them around , you wont stop being fascinated about unix and admiring(only admiring) it developers , system or application ... ::

its a reprint during september 1991 of the 1986 edition

unix network programming
by w. richard stevens
a ninth printing during april 1998 of the 1990 edition(i think so)

I personally buy my books from technical book sellers. I'll use Aamzon to look and see what the best sellers are, Then I check bookpool.com and nerdbooks.com I usually go with Nerdbooks since they are in Dallas, Tx and I'm in Fort Worth. I can usually get books delivered to my door next day usuing regular shipping. Also if you need something a little older I'd check alibris.com. I can usually find older books for something like $3 or $4. (Got the K&R book for like 20 bucks)I find that amazon and barnes are a little pricey, especially for a college student.
