building including ppp / pppd support

I have an embedded ARM lInux target and I need to use ppp for use with a USB modem.

1) I have read that I need to include ppp support in the kernel; while I have enabled this I am still not sure why it is needed?

2) Where are the official sources for ppp / pppd and how do I configure them for building?

Ok found source at ftp://ftp.samba.org/pub/ppp/

Of course I need to run ./configure then make, but this wont configure it for my target. How do I do this?
