Bookmarks disappeared

This is the only Linux forum which I regularly follow, hence my appeal for help is posted here. If there are better places to post this please tell.

Linux Mint 17.2
daniel@Daniel ~ $ firefox --version
Mozilla Firefox 78.7.1esr

This morning my desktop PC booted normally and Firefox launched normally. The Bookmarks menu is still shown at the left edge of the screen. However the Bookmarks Menu folder is empty!

Google turns up plenty of advice most of which I don't understand. I am a recreational programmer and know little of "systems" lingo.

My computer file backup method is primitive. Every two weeks I copy the entire /home/daniel folder to an external drive. The bookmarks have not changed much since the most recent backup was made. Is it possible to copy only the bookmarks from the backup volume? I'd hate to lose any files changed or created since that backup was made.

There should be a hidden directory in your home named .mozilla and under there are your bookmarks. I haven't used Firefox in a while so I don't have an exact example.

Bookmarks restored! {Sigh of relief!}

Google led to this page:

Following the cookbook instructions I was able to restore the list bookmarks.

SOLVED!

You can also manually export the bookmarks out to an HTML file before your backups are performed. It's handy to have should your home directory get clobbered. A brand new Firefox instance and profile could simply re-import them. It's also a way to import them into most browsers should you ever decide that Firefox isn't working for you any more or you simply want to try out another browser for a while but want your Firefox bookmarks available during the test drive.

You can mark the thread as SOLVED using the thread tools at the top of the page.
