What is your hardware? SCSI or IDE
What filesystem are you using?

It is a Western Digital WD13200 IDE Hard Drive. I am using Fat32 system.

Just run scandisk if you are using win9x, or use the checkdisk utility. It will mark out the bad sectors and they will not be used again. Also, you can try out tools like norton disk doctor, which can detect any problems in your disks and even fix up some of them. (What more can one ask?)

I notice people always seem to answer "run scandisk" even on Linux forums. Does anyone know of all the best linux utilities? I can't beleive people recommend using windows to repair hard drives which are running linux.

if you intend to do a format and still want to have Fat32 back on the disk, you may use MSDOS command : " format drive: /U "
with that "/U" switch ,bad sectors will be ?block?mark?re-allocate?remap?whatever we said?
best done is to boot into MSDOS with WIN98 boot disk
it's kind of a low-level format with that "/U" switch just to have a peace of mind after that
because bad sectors tend to "grow" after a while
do be aware that if your bad sectors are terrible, sometimes by doing a format may render your disk unusable.
