Best distro for Comp-Sci student?
 

Hello,

I have recently graduated from a three year Computer Programmer/ Analyst Diploma Program at an Ontario college. Throughout the three years, I have taken a Linux administration course, a programming in c course, and a Perl course that all evolved around RedHat 9. The rest of my courses were primarily based around the .NET framework.

In September, I will begin attending University through a Degree Completion program. Because I already have a diploma, I can enter University at the third year level and achieve my BSc in Computer Science (Hon) in about two years. I know *nix development is a main component of University, and want to install Linux on my home computer in preparation. I also know this University uses Sun Solaris.

My question:

Can you recommend a free Linux distro for a .NET programmer with limited Linux experience? I want to use a distro that will not only best prepare me for University, but also when I begin working in Industry.

no such thing really... any major brand will do you fine.

Any if you have any real concerns about this, you should get a recommendation from the school, not here.

But as suggested, any distribution will do. Of course, if they are heavy into Solaris, then all bets are off.

Yo, I graduated from the University of Southampton (England) with a BSc (hons) in Computer Science :) I've used Slackware from (nearly) the start and stuck with it.
