Yes, that is definitely a useful improvement, grail. Thank you for the references too.

This thread went well beyond my original question and my expectations. I asked how to extract just the checksum from the output of the md5sum command, and it turned into a discussion of arrays and logic that went well beyond what I asked about. I appreciate all the pointers and examples that everyone contributed.
