Question bandwidth calcuation using pcap

I am trying to write a program(my mini project) that will calculate bandwidth on the subnet. so i figured out that it needs pcap library. can any body give some pointers on finding the bandwidth that is being used in the subnet. Little bit of concept is enough
thanks is advance,
[since my exams are going on i'm kind of busy with booooks. plz help.]
