automate filling of web forms

I'm trying to automatically fill out a web form. I can't seem to find any information on this anywhere - the only things that keep coming up are all these programs that do it for you. Can I do this using a shell script? Anyone know where I should look?

What is wrong with the programs that do it for you? You would have to write your own simple HTTP client which sends the post data that you want to fill in, through the headers.
