animated image uses 99% of cpu
I have an animated image that I created using Paint Shop Pro on Windows95 years ago. I used it under Linux for a while without any noticeable problem but after upgrading my main machine to Debian Etch, it's using over 99% of cpu time on a 19" lcd monitor.
I then checked what the result is on another machine still running Debian Sarge and the cpu use drops to 30, 40 or 50% depending on the file although the 50% use was for the smallest HTML file rendered.
One cpu is a Sempron 2000 and the other is a Sempron 2400 although the fastest cpu is probably on the machine that renders the slowest.
I spent a lot of time to create that image, to make sure it would not use the cpu too much. The image is 16 bytes by 32 bytes (100 ms), it contains 2 colors (white and gray), 2 diagonal rows of 3 pixels and 1 diagonal row of 2 pixels are gray on a white background. On the second image, the location of these rows of gray pixel is changed to simulate the rain. The .gif file is 146 bytes.
My question is: is that sort of cpu usage (30% to 50%) acceptable for a background tiling image on a 15" crt monitor?
If not, what would be a better way to make these images so that they render reasonably fast enough on most monitors?
Thank you for your help.
