Alternatives to programming with Visual Basic ??

I've started to learn to program with Visual Basic 2002 (.Net). I've written a program to do simple CAD text translations. I've had no luck with Wine or Mono to get it running in Linux. I'd appreciate any suggestions or Web addresses were a person could check out the alternatives to programming with Visual Basic.

Sincerely,

Kevin Tough

Well there are thousands of programming languages out there. You could write in C# and target mono or use Java. What is the goal exactly?

There's also gambas, which is a project to recreate visual basic in linux. It's not exactly complete though.

If you are not targetting only windows operating systems i would suggest learning python or java.

Suggestions for the java alternative
I think you could try first to learn C#(Vb.net with ; at the end of a statement, [] instead of parenthesis). If you then know C#, it is easy to learn java. I easily switched from visual basic to Vb.net --> C# ---> Java

Suggestions for python

I will start learning python soon, it seems very easy like visual basic.

Personally I suggest Lazarus. Itīs a Delphi clone fully capable of RAD development.

Itīs really easy to use, powerful and generates native executables on each platform. Currently it supports Linux, Windows, Solaris, all BSDs, Mac OS X, Windows CE

Itīs website:
