ActiveX controls & XML in general

Hello all
I am just beginning down the long road of teaching myself XML (I understand the basics of HTML, but will continue to revise HTML as the need arises) and recently bought one of the Sam's 24 hour books on XML. In it, it is explicit in being biased toward IE5 (at the time of writing). As an exclusive Linux user, I have a couple of queries around this bias:

1. The author addresses ActiveX controls - objects - that were developed by MS and seem to be supported well enough under an IE browser but (apparently?) not so well in other browsers. Given this:
1.1. Is there a non-MS parallel/clone to ActiveX controls?
1.2. How necessary are ActiveX controls in first, learning XML and second, web-development?
1.3. Are ActiveX controls the only type of web-objects and if not, are all web-objects based on MS systems/development?

2. Is XML itself independent of MS in so far as in my learning XML from a book biased toward MS products are there topics that I should be supplementing from other non-MS-biased sources, and if so, can someone give me a couple of recommendations as to decent sources?
