A simple Linux Kernel Device Module

I would like to study a device module in the kernel, but need to start out as simple as possible. Could somebody who knows alot about the kernel suggest to me a few good source files from the vanilla kernel to check out? I just want to see what it takes to get a device going with the kernel - the simpler the better. I suppose any kernel version back to 1992 would do, as well ... however, it would be more illuminating to look in 2.6. Thank you!

Check out Linux Device Drivers 3rd Edition. It is free on-line and covers all the basics and some not so basics. You really don't want to look at older modules as the entire method of coding them has changed through different releases.
