‘alutLoadWAVFile’ is deprecated error?

Hi all,
I'm trying to learn OpenAL, however I'm running into a few errors,
The tutorials all seem to be out of date, I've found a couple which new new functions for starting the system however when I try to load the file using the function alutLoadWAVFile I get a warning teeling me it's not used anymore (deprecated).
The OpenAL manual uses loadWAVFile("test.wav",&format,&data,&size,&freq,&loop);

however trying to use loadWAVFile, gives an ‘loadWAVFile’ was not declared in this scope, however I have all the headers (I think)

#include <AL/alut.h>
#include <AL/al.h>
#include <AL/alc.h>
#include <AL/alext.h>

Can anyone tell me to load a soundfile? Thanks.
