Ok we have a SCO Unix OpenServer 5 running basically our database server. We frequently need telnet and ftp which most of the time it works great. Every once in a while maybe about once every other week or so you wont be able to connect to any of those services. It eventually just times out. I can even ftp localhost straight from the unix server. Now i am a newbie when it comes to unix so what could be causing this problem. Usually when i restart the unix server everything then begins to work find but that becomes a pain in the ass every once in a while.
Could it be a license issue?
Are the "users" of the database and ftp and telnet counted in a way that could exceed your license at times?
Just a guess.
EDIT: Although checking that the PCs concerned can ping each other to rule out a network problem would be the first step.

As soon as the problem occurs again ill be able to determine if i can ping out. I think it would be a network related issue if i cant even ftp localhost from the same machine. Is there a way to restart the network services and save from a reboot, or restart them the same way their started on a reboot either way. The database software is a third party software and only communicates with a windows 2000 app server.
Which version of SCO OSR 5 you're using ? Every now and then, I've noticed that they always have patches and supplements that needs to be installed on top of it. Usually, the RS supplements (Release Supplements) are the mandatory patches.
Thanks, you're using a 5.0.5. The required supplements/patches that I've come across are :-
RS505x - which is a must
oss497x - core update
** the x denotes a alphabet. Usually the higher alphabet order are the latest revisions.
There are a lot of fixes/patches in these 2 package, some of the components are network related. There is a *.txt file that will guide you, on how to install.
Both are quite common in some of the systems that I've seen so far.
