Jehanne: Plan 9 with a POSIX layer
This is not entirely un-interesting: Jehanne's sole developer took Plan 9 and added a couple of convenience improvements, like a library to support POSIX. As a proof of concept, the mksh was ported to it. I heard rumors that NetSurf could be ported as well - that would make Jehanne the first "Plan-9-like" operating system with a decent web browser. :)
I'll definitely keep an eye on it. |
I've run plan 9 already, kind of a interesting OS. I'd be interested in trying this one.
Let us know when they release an iso. AFAIKS it's still just source code. The interesting part is, I discovered this project earlier today, via your plan 9 text editor links in a previous post. It seems plan9(base) is getting a little more attention recently. I think another project is called HarveyOS(just source so far). But so far the only iso's I could find were plan9(old) and 9front. |
Harvey OS is one of the projects used for Jehanne, according to the README. :)

I tried to use Plan 9 once, but I couldn't get my brain around it, if they can make it more intuitive, I may try it again. ;)

My biggest hurdle was figuring out the WM(rio). It is also hard to figure out what is installed. Luckily I'm decent on a terminal. |
rio's documentation is OK, I'd say. Rob Pike usually talks a lot about what he did, waiting for someone to pat him on the back. :D

Yes, I did.

Building and running it on your existing operating system is fairly easy though - the Jehanne toolchain is quite usable and its documentation is good enough. Remember that this project lacks manpower yet, so while it has a couple of nice additions when compared to the Bell Labs distribution, there will be rough edges. Also, if you're already using deadpixi's sam editor, you'll probably wonder about missing features - the Lucent Public License is not really compatible with the GPL. |
