Install MacOs X on amd64 - HDD not detected
 

I'm trying to install MacOs X on an amd64x machine.
Before booting from the DVD I have created an unformatted logical partition.
When I get to the point where I have to select a destination I get no options.
If I open Utilities > Disk Utility it only recognises the DVD and doesn't appear to see the Hard Disk.

Any ideas on how I might solve this problem?

The operation you are requesting information on is not legal, as there are no AMD64 Macs.

I appreciate your concern, but as long as the copy I want to install is legal I have no obligation to use Apple Macintosh hardware.

Re-read the Apple license for Mac OSX; it is licensed for use only with a Apple hardware. As shipped, the software will not run on non-Apple hardware, so a circumvention (patch) is required. Both are violations. Since Spain is a WIPO Copyright Treaty country, this makes the use illegal there as well.

Yes, it's illegal. That being said, it's both illegal and naive to think you can install OS X on a logical partition. And OS X doesn't like SATA either.

I guess Steve Jobs still hasn't learned from his mistakes...

OK, I may not like proprietary vendors, but you can't call what Apple is doing a mistake by any stretch of imagination. The stock has gone from $6 to $120 over the last five years. Even I have an iPod. ;)

Yeah, but without wanting to start a flamewar here, OSX adoption might improve if people weren't forced to buy Apple's expensive hardware in order to use it.

I can't remember where I read that Bill Gates was quite a big fan of MacOS, and wanted Steve Jobs to open it up to the PC market to increase adoption, but Jobs refused.

Apple is not at all interested in increasing Mac OS X adoption, except as it sells more hardware. They are selling a brand more than a product. The OS to them is the lure to their otherwise ordinary (but attractively designed) hardware. They sell Macs, iPods and soon iPhones. Everything else is in support of that. If OS X were to become a commodity (as Bill Gates wants), the bottom line would drop out of the Mac market; it would lose its cachet.

Attempts to circumvent the Apple license to run MacOs X on other hardware will not be allowed on LQ. If you wish to discuss the nature of the license and how evil Steve Jobs or Bill Gates may be, that can be done in General.
