Installation problem...

I followed your instructions concerning installation and it works up until I try to install slackpkg+. I can not find the desktop-14.1-$ARCH/slackware/ subdirectory. I can find one without $Arch/ only. Not only that I can not figure out how to make any package listed download and install. I tried by starting from scratch and end up at the same spot. I really like slackware and have not used it since I got wireless way back but, am anxious to get back into it and get a bit more active with the distro. Thank you, Ronald M March...

I can not finish the install. I am able to install Slackware and boot into it but, after I do this on the command line, I can not find the desktop-14.1-$ARCH/slackware/ subdirectory. All I can find is one without $ARCH/ part. I also can not make any of the packages download. It asks where to download it. Where do I download it also? I have not used Slackware in years. After I got wireless I moved back to Red Hat or Debian, so I am a bit rusty. I guess I got lazy. I am trying. I am close to retiring and want to really get into Linux and get my hands dirty. I will have plenty of time. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thank You, Ron March...

What architecture are you installing to, 32 or 64 bit? Here's the main website. Slackpkg+ is located in the slackware sub-directory of both the 32 bit and 64 bit directories. Right click on the file with the .txz file extension and "select save file as" and save it to your download folder. From there you should be able to continue with the instructions.

$ARCH is a variable placeholder that has to be replaced by either "32bit" or "64bit", depending on your architecture. I'll add a corresponding note in the documentation.

@PROBLEMCHYLD

Also I forgot:

If you don't know what to do after starting the installer (setup) as you implied in your post, then here's a Slackware installation guide.

The steps are part of the standard Slackware installation and are not covered in the MLED installation guide as was mentioned by the MLED project leader.

I ran setup, I am at the screen where the options addswap, help etc... What option do I choose. This is where I get confused @

Run the installer Slackware:

# Setup

SERIES PACKAGE SELECTION: confirm the selection of packets by default, since the tagfiles will take over and be responsible for the selection of packages.

SELECT PROMPTING MODE: tagpath - Use a set of custom tagfiles.

Path to tagfiles: / tag

When I run setup, it doesn't go straight to SERIES PACKAGE SELECTION:

I don't want to sound patronizing but have you installed a standard Slackware system recently (let's say since Slacwkare 14.1 was released)?

I'm just asking because your question is a bit surprising if one is used to installing Slackware.

To clarify a bit here's a short background to avoid misunderstanding (and I apologize if you were already familiar with this).

The MLED project whose installation guide you're trying to follow is not a distribution forked from Slackware but an add-on project to the Slackware distribution. As such, one big assumption is that the user will first install a Slackware system and then will proceed with adding packages specific to MLED.

Consequently, the MLED installation guide is going through some short-cuts regarding the first part of the installation process which focuses on installing Slackware using TAG files. After running "setup", the user is supposed to know her way through the Slackware setup system and should easily recognize the steps "PACKAGE SERIES SELECTION", etc

In fact, the installation of MLED specific packages starts only at step "Download the Microlinux scripts".

That's why in my previous answer, I refer you to the Slackware installation documentation because you first need to install Slackware. You can do a standard full installation of Slackware by following the Slackware installation documentation and then you can install MLED specific packages using the MLED installation guide from the step I mentioned above.

Installing Slackware with the TAG file option is an efficient way to prepare for MLED because it will only install the packages necessary to MLED. But a full installation of Slackware also works but is less efficient because some packages will be installed during the Slackware step and will then be removed during the MLED step.

May I suggest that you try to focus first on installing a standard Slackware system using this Slackware installation guide from the Slackware documentation project.

Should you need support for that task, please post in the official Slackware installation sub-forum. I have no doubt that you'll get the necessary support.

Thanks for your help, I got it working. Now all I need to do is fix my kernel panic crashed. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1501, I'll keep reading in the forums for a fix. Thanks again.

Are you using the generic kernel?

If so, the kernel panic could be due to incomplete installation (ex: missing or improperly configured initrd file).

Check out this README for detailed instructions on how to create and install the initrd file for use with generic kernel

I actually tried both kernels and the results are the same. I was reading somewhere about having to do with ACHI drivers. I'm still investigating the issue at hand.

Up and running like a champ, thanks guys. Switching to the generic kernel removed the sound. Anyone know how to fix this?

Did you take the screenshot when running the generic kernel? I'm asking because it looks like the sound volume applet is working fine (it detects a sound card and the volume is set close to maximum value).

Maybe some sound kernel modules are not automatically loaded when you use the generic kernel (I would not know why because it never happened to me)?
Try to check if some sound modules are loaded by running at the console:

Code:
lsmod | grep snd

Congratulations for getting everything to work.

For your sound problem, you can do the following.

1. Open a terminal and launch 'alsamixer'. You may have to unmute one or more channels.

2. Play a sound: $ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/*.wav

3. When this works, add the Xfce mixer applet to your notification area.

Cheers,

Niki
